Wrists Hinge, Never Roll

This is a common mistake among women (whose wrists are very flexible), or young players whose wrists aren't strong enough to support the club. This incorrect position will put the club “shut” at the top of the back swing producing potential low hooking shots. Also the club will be laid off and unstable at the top of the swing making the club be off plane or simply be out of shape. |
Wrists are designed to work as hinge joints and when used properly will feel as though you are hammering a nail. This will put your thumbs underneath the club for support and most importantly will put the clubface in a square position at the top of the swing. It is the wrist cock that takes the club back over your shoulder, and preserves the right angle made with your right arm. Without the hinging of the wrists the club will look like a lightning rod or you will make the mistake of using your arms to take the club back. This move will collapse your arms in the back swing and force you to lose all the width to your swing. |
Drills
A good drill to help you to feel the proper use of the wrists is to grip the club with a split grip. Place the left hand (for a right handed person) in its normal position, then place your right hand at the lowest point still on the rubber grip. Make some practice swings to feel the improvement and then go ahead and hit some golf balls in this fashion.
Remember to stay low in your posture as you have gone down lower on the club!!!!
